Short Background
Sinclair Lewis, Minnesota’s most renowned novelist and the first American to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, passed away in Rome in 1951. But with a little “willing suspension of disbelief,” an original and free historical streaming film presentation will provide new insights into this giant of American literature.
In The Life and Loves of Sinclair Lewis, written by Bob Beverage and co-directed by James Gambone and Bob Beverage, a journalist fulfills a dream and gets a once-in-a-life-time interview with Mr. Lewis himself. Then, in an even bigger surprise, the journalist’s dream also includes both of Sinclair’s ex-wives.
In this short feature, we see the social, literary and political rollercoaster of the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s through the eyes of Sinclair Lewis and his wives. It touches on personal joys and sorrows, the pain of addiction, the power of a birthplace, and how relevant Lewis’ works are to the issues we face in the 21st century.
To celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the publishing of Sinclair Lewis’ first great novel, Main Street, we have also created a free, two-part streaming educational series with a downloadable Discussion Guide to introduce a new generation to Sinclair Lewis.
