      <image:title>About</image:title>
<image:caption>The conference is open to all interested writers. Each participant will be able to choose three workshops and a panel discussion to attend (one hour each), plus the keynote talk. Lunch will be served to those registering up to three days before the conference and will give participants an opportunity to chat with other writers and with the presenters. Sinclair Lewis, the first American to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, was a mentor to many aspiring writers during his career. This conference, held in Lewis’ hometown of Sauk Centre, Minnesota, is a tribute to a writer who took the time to help other writers hone their craft. Your support is needed now more than ever, please consider a donation so that we can continue to celebrate the life of Sinclair Lewis and continue his legacy of mentoring writers. We’re all in this together.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Lewis</image:title>
<image:caption>SINCLAIR LEWIS, the first American to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Sauk Centre, Minnesota, in 1885. Although he was proud of his Midwestern roots, he traveled widely and was interested in many different aspects of American society, from business and medicine to religion and small town life. His concern with issues involving women, race, and the powerless in society make his work still vital and pertinent today. As Sheldon Norman Grebstein wrote, Lewis “was the conscience of his generation and he could well serve as the conscience of our own. His analysis of the America of the 1920s holds true for the America of today. His prophecies have become our truths and his fears our most crucial problems.” Sinclair Lewis was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for Main Street and Babbitt, and won the award for Arrowsmith (although he turned it down). He was a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He died in Rome in 1951. His cremated remains are buried in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.</image:caption>

      <image:title>It Can't Happen Here - It Can’t Happen Here (1935)</image:title>
<image:caption>The novel was published during the heyday of fascism in Europe, which was reported on by Dorothy Thompson, Lewis's wife. The novel describes the rise of Berzelius "Buzz" Windrip, a demagogue who is elected President of the United States, after fomenting fear and promising drastic economic and social reforms while promoting a return to patriotism and "traditional" values. After his election, Windrip takes complete control of the government and imposes totalitarian rule with the help of a ruthless paramilitary force, in the manner of European fascists such as Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. The novel's plot centers on journalist Doremus Jessup's opposition to the new regime and his subsequent struggle against it as part of a liberal rebellion.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Main Street - Main Street (1920)</image:title>
<image:caption>Satirizing small town life, Main Street is perhaps Sinclair Lewis's most famous book, and led in part to his eventual 1930 Nobel Prize for Literature. It relates the life and struggles of Carol Milford Kennicott in the small town of Gopher Prairie, Minnesota, as she comes into conflict with the small-town mentality of its residents. Highly acclaimed upon publication, Main Street remains a recognized American classic.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Job - The Job…</image:title>
<image:caption>…is considered an early declaration of the rights of working women. The focus is on the main character, Una Golden, and her desire to establish herself in a legitimate occupation while balancing the eventual need for marriage. The story takes place in the early 1900-1920s and takes Una from a small Pennsylvania town to New York. Forced to work due to family illness, Una shows a talent for the traditional male bastion of commercial real estate and, while valued by her company, she struggles to achieve the same status of her male coworkers. On a parallel track, her quest for traditional romance and love is important but her unique role as a working woman, doing a man's job, makes it tough to find an appropriate suitor. Una is on track to marry Walter Babson, who appears to be a good man but lacks the excitement of her eventual husband, Edward Schwirtz. He is a salesman with all the charm necessary to win her heart, but the marriage is doomed from the start. Una eventually determines to divorce him, which is also scandalous for the time. As the book closes, Una emerges triumphant in both her career and her personal life. The novel was published before Lewis achieved any significant fame and provides insights on working women as well as the unique nature (for the time) of having a woman as the lead character.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Free Air - Free Air</image:title>
<image:caption>From a critical perspective, Free Air is consistent with Sinclair Lewis's lean towards egalitarian politics, which he displays in his other works (most notably in It Can't Happen Here). Examples of his politics in Free Air are found in Lewis's emphasis on the heroic role played by the book's protagonist, Milt Dagget, a working class everyman type. Conversely, Lewis presents nearly every upper-class character in Claire Boltwood's world (including her railroad-mogul father) as snobby elitists. The story also champions the democratic nature of the automobile versus the more aristocratic railroad travel. Lewis's emphasis on the freedom which automobiles would eventually give the working and middle classes bolsters the egalitarian, democratic aesthetic. Free Air is one of the first novels about the road trip, a subject around which the Beats (most notably Jack Kerouac) would build a cult following in the mid-20th century.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Ann Vickers - Ann Vickers</image:title>
<image:caption>The novel follows the heroine, Ann Vickers, from tomboy school girl in the late 19th century American Midwest, through college, and into her forties. It charts her postgraduate suffragist phase in the early 20th century. As a suffragist, she is imprisoned, and her experiences there lead her to become interested in social work and prison reform. As a social worker in a settlement house during the First World War, she has her first sexual affair, becomes pregnant, and has an abortion. Later, having become successful running a modern and progressive prison for women, she marries a dull man, more out of loneliness than love. Mired in a rather loveless marriage, she falls in love with a controversial (and perhaps corrupt) judge. Flouting both middle-class convention and that of her progressive social circle in New York, she becomes pregnant by the judge, having a son.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Thomas Pope - Thomas Pope</image:title>
<image:caption>Presenter: “Understanding Character and How a Story Evolves” Thomas Pope is a screenwriter whose credits include Someone to Watch Over Me, F/X, Lords of Discipline, Bad Boys, Hammett, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. He is also the author of Good Scripts, Bad Scripts (Random House). Thomas has worked for Francis Ford Coppola, Barry Levinson, Robert Redford, Ridley Scott, Frank Oz, and Penny Marshall, among others. Pope is a Star Speaker at the Los Angeles Screenwriting Expo and judge of the Canadian National Screenwriting Contest. He was co-producer and script consultant on Ali Selim’s Sweet Land. “I’ve spent most of my free time thinking about how stories work. What mechanisms, structures and forces are at play when a story really moves us?” To answer his own question, Pope has devised two theories that offer a new way of “understanding the secret, hidden mechanisms that make a story sing.” He will present both ideas during his presentation using power points and allowing time for questions and reactions. In the first part of Pope’s presentation, “A New Way of Understanding Character,” he notes that, in any story, novel, script or play, a character finds themselves in situations that accelerates or slows time. This serves to contract or expand the plot. Though this may sound theoretical, Pope’s power point presentation is both funny, practical and easy to understand. The second segment of his presentation, “How a Story Evolves and Grows,” explores how a character in a story can evolve and change in much the same way that a species evolves and changes. Pope points out that, in the end, a story is about a character’s evolution. Hamlet, for example, evolves to see how to gather the strength, courage and cunning to defeat wicked King Claudius. About his two-topics in one presentation, Tom notes that “Participants will leave this presentation seeing story telling and characters in an entirely new light. They will never look at both the same way again. The power points are fun, visual and entertaining and offer everyone a new way of seeing how a story works.”</image:caption>

Her debut novel, South Pole Station, was a New York Times' Editor's Choice, an Indie Next Pick, and a Shelf Awareness Best Book of 2017, as well as one of Earther/Gizmodo's Best Environmental Fiction Books and a SyFy "Climate Fiction Book That Could Save the Earth." It also won the 2017 Lascaux Prize in Fiction. Her 2019 sci-fi/cli-fi novelette, Muri, was nominated for a Pushcart Prize, a Hugo, and the Shirley Jackson Award. She is also the author of a nonfiction book, Red River Rising: The Anatomy of a Flood and the Survival of an American City. She lives in an old farmhouse with her family, surrounded by trees and winged friends. In her presentation about climate fiction, she will discuss the nature of this "new" environmental fiction, including the ongoing evolution of the body of literature that has come to be termed "cli-fi." Ashley will explore different approaches to documenting our changing world, from realistic and speculative to hard sci-fi and fantasy; and why she prefers the term "First Impact Fiction." Discussion will also include the way that fiction relating to climate change can allow readers to experience both the danger (Paolo Bagicaluppi's The Water Knife, for example) and the hope (Kim Stanley Robinson's New York 2140) embedded in climate impact and why both kinds of framing are important. Finally, she'll share some of the challenges she experiences when writing this kind of fiction in her own cli-fi writing practice, including risk-taking and her decision to occasionally work in different genres, such as sci-fi and fantasy. About her presentation, Ashley said “I’m looking forward to a lively discussion with participants who are interested in trying cli-fi or who are already at work on this kind of writing.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Keynote Speaker: “The Unchanging World of Sinclair Lewis“ Don Shelby is widely considered one of the best, and most decorated, local news anchors and reporters in the country. He has won three National Emmys and two George Foster Peabody awards, which are the broadcast equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize. He was awarded the National Distinguished Service Award by the Society of Professional Journalists, the International Radio and Television News Directors Association’s First Place honors for International Investigative Reporting and Columbia University’s DuPont Award for Investigative Journalism. He retired from daily reporting and anchoring at WCCO in November 2010, after 45 years in the industry. Since his retirement, Don continues his work in environmental journalism and is a member of the Climate Science Rapid Response Team round table. He currently serves on the board of Climate Generation, the Great Plains Institute and is a trustee of the Science Museum of Minnesota. He is a credited co-author of the communique of the Oslo, Norway Congress on Solutions to Climate Change, sponsored by the Nobel Peace Prize Institute. Don’s first book, The Season Never Ends: Wins, Losses, and the Wisdom of the Court, was published in 2011. It features a foreword by former University of Minnesota men’s basketball head coach Tubby Smith and endorsements from sports analyst Ahmad Rashad and author Will Weaver. As a player, coach and observer, basketball remains one of Don’s passions. Don is proud of his 10,000 plus volume book collection which includes many rare books and signed first editions. He is also proud of his family, including Barbara, his wife of 48 years; his three grown daughters and his four grandchildren. Despite his professional accomplishments as a broadcast journalist, author, playwright and actor, the face Don shaves every morning is still that of a seventeen-year old basketball player. This year marks Don’s third turn as a keynote speaker at the Sinclair Lewis Writers’ Conference. He last joined us in 2015 as part of the conference’s 25th Anniversary Celebration, where he wrote and acted in a special performance portraying Mark Twain and what he had to say about writers and writing. Don’s keynote talk this year is entitled The Unchanging World of Sinclair Lewis. He will share a journalist’s perspective on how Lewis’s themes are ever-present and still in style.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Kyle Tran Myhre - Kyle Tran Myhre</image:title>
<image:caption>Presenter: “Spoken Word Poetry as Practice and Culture” Kyle Tran Myhre (also known as Guante) is a poet, educator, and activist based in Minneapolis, MN. His work explores the relationships between identity, power, and resistance. He has performed everywhere from the United Nations, to music festivals like Eaux Claires and Soundset, to countless colleges, universities, and conferences. A member of two National Poetry Slam championship teams, Tran Myhre also completed his Masters studies at the University of Minnesota with a focus on spoken word, critical pedagogy, and social justice education. In that spirit, his performances use poems as doorways into dialogue, critical thinking, and community-building. Whether writing about men’s roles in ending gender violence, challenging dominant narratives related to race and racism, or just telling stories about the different jobs he’s had, Tran Myhre strives to cultivate a deeper, more critical engagement with social justice issues, one based in both empathy and agency. His latest book, Not a Lot of Reasons to Sing, but Enough (2022 Button Poetry), is a sci-fi-flavored exploration of the role that art and artists play in resisting authoritarianism. Featuring poems, essays, theater elements, and visual art, the book follows two wandering poets as they make their way from village to village, across a prison colony moon full of exiled rebels, robots, and storytellers. Part post-apocalyptic road journal, part alternate universe ode to Hip Hop, and part “Letters to a Young Poet”-style toolkit for emerging poets and aspiring movement-builders, it’s also a one-of-a-kind practitioners’ take on poetry, power, and possibility. Regarding his presentation, Guante said “My goal is to focus on the spoken word: the idea of performance and how writing can ‘live’ in other spaces besides the page. Across the globe, the spoken word movement has reignited poetry as a force for artistic expression, critical dialogue, and community-building. As both a specific form (writing poetry that is meant to be shared aloud) and a deeper cultural practice (tracing its roots back millennia), spoken word creates space for all of us to tell our stories, make our values concrete, and speak up about the issues and ideas that matter to us.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Lorna Landvik - Lorna Landvik</image:title>
<image:caption>Presenter: “Don’t Be Afraid of Your Imagination” Writing and theater were Lorna Landvik’s twin passions when she was growing up in her home town of Minneapolis, Minnesota. After graduating from high school, she and her best friend traveledin Europe, settling in Bavaria where they supported themselves as hotel chamber maids and English tutors. When she returned to the States, Landvik briefly attended the University of Minnesota before moving to San Francisco, where she performed stand-up and improvisational comedy. Another move took her to Los Angeles, where she worked as a stand-up comic at the Comedy Store and The Improv, supplementing her income with a variety of temp jobs—including one at the Playboy Mansion (“I felt like Margaret Mead studying a secret society”) and working for Atlantic Records. Landvik has continued to nurture her interest in theater, appearing with the nationally-acclaimed improvisational group, “Duddly Riggs,” and acting in plays such as Bad Seed, Lunatic Cellmates, Valley of the Dolls and My Backyard Party. She often performs a one-woman, all-improvised show entitled Party in the Rec Room. Landvik made her debut as a novelist with the critically acclaimed Patty Jane’s House of Curl. She is also the best-selling author of twelve other novels, including Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons, The View From Mount Joy, Mayor of the Universe, Best To Laugh, Once in a Blue Moon, and Chronicles of a Radical Hag (With Recipes). Regarding her presentation, Lorna said "What stops you or blocks you from writing? Do you get stuck on dialogue, scene-work, character development? What prevents you from putting words on the page? In my sessions, I will share what works for me as well as lead you through some fun exercises that’ll loosen up your tight writing muscle!”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sarah Warren - Sarah Warren</image:title>
<image:caption>Presenter: “Identifying Your Storyteller Origin Story: How to Write With Integrity and Intention” Sarah Warren is an award-winning children's book author and a contributor to Bravery Magazine. Her trade picture books include Beyoncé: Shine Your Light, Charlotte and the Nutcracker (written with Charlotte Nebres), Stacey Abrams: Lift Every Voice, and the forthcoming titles: Majora Carter: How to live in a Better Neighborhood Without Leaving Home, Marla Spivak Thinks Like a Bee, and Everything a Drum. Her book, Dolores Huerta: A Hero to Migrant Workers, was picked for the 2013 Amelia Bloomer Top Ten Book List and awarded a Jane Addams Peace Association Children’s Book Award honor. As an early childhood educator, she is dedicated to bringing multicultural, everyday heroes to life in elementary schools where children do not often see themselves reflected in the literature they experience. She teaches teen-aged writers to raise awareness through their one-of-a-kind expressions. Sarah has partnered with Free Arts Minnesota, The Bridge for Youth, and Avanti Center for Girls to provide workshops for young people. She is a registered trainer for the Minnesota Center of Professional Development and an Artist Educator for Face Forward: Humanity Through Art. Sarah seeks to reach ALL readers by presenting in a variety of settings, including People Serving People, the Children's Hospital, and the Minnesota State Fair. A former educator, Sarah served (very) young people as a Minnesota Reading Corps tutor and coach, a Head Start teacher; and a YWCA of Minneapolis Children's Center director. She currently facilitates community story strolls featuring other BIPOC Minnesota authors. Sarah’s family lives in Minneapolis with their dog, Bruce Valentine. Regarding her presentation topic, Sarah said "According to acclaimed critic, writer, and educator Phillip Lopate, nonfiction writers strive to tell a 'literary and literal truth.' Nonfiction books are true, and they also feel true. But how can writers develop the objectivity they need to locate the truth? How do children’s writers in particular make sure their books will be trustworthy touchstones for teachers, librarians, caregivers, and young readers? In this talk, we will discuss how our personalities, cultural backgrounds, experiences, prejudices, fears, and passions can impact research, writing, and revision. Using writing exercises and a playful, reflective practice, we will consider the motivations that fuel our storytelling. Participants will leave with tools to create entertaining, accurate nonfiction that will inspire intercultural exploration and wonder.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Marcie Rendon - Marcie Rendon</image:title>
<image:caption>Keynote Speaker: “We Are Still Here: Telling Our Stories Through Poetry, Fiction and Non-fiction” “If you’re going to be a writer, you have to write from your own authenticity,” Rendon suggests. “Believe in your own story, your own words, your own flow.” Marcie Rendon is an enrolled member of the White Earth Nation and a renowned author, playwright, poet and freelance writer. A voracious reader as a young girl, she eventually started writing poetry and stories of her own. One of her many successes was being listed as one of the top 30 Native American writers in the country by Oprah Magazine in 2020. She received Minnesota’s McKnight Distinguished Artist Award that same year. Rendon is also a community arts activist, supporting other native artists to pursue their individual art. She is a frequent speaker for colleges and community groups on Native issues, leadership and writing. Rendon’s critically acclaimed murder mystery series features Cash Blackbear, a young Ojibwe woman who helps her mentor, Sheriff Wheaton, on some investigations. Blackbear has a gift which allows her to see and hear things no one else can. Rendon subtly weaves how Blackbear uses that gift into her stories without it being distracting. Sinister Graves, the third novel in the series, was a finalist for the 2023 Minnesota Book Awards. As an Indigenous woman, mother and former therapist, Rendon uses her experience and intimate knowledge of Minnesota’s backroads and byways to craft tales about the good, and the evils, that exist in the underbelly of rural America. About her keynote talk, Marcie notes that, “As Native people, we have known that in order to survive we had to create, re-create, produce and re-produce. The effect of the denial of our existence is that many of us have become invisible...the systematic disruption of our families by the removal of our children was effective for silencing our voices.” “However, not everyone can still that desire, that up-welling inside that says sing, write, draw, move, be...we can sing our hearts out, tell our stories, paint our visions. We are in a position to create a more human reality… in order to live, we have to make our own mirrors.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Presenter: “A Year of Writing Dangerously” Thomas R. Smith is the author of ten books of poems, including Windy Day at Kabekona: New and Selected Prose Poems (White Pine Press, 2018), Storm Island (Red Dragonfly Press, 2020) and Medicine Year (Paris Morning Publications 2022). He has also edited several books including Airmail: The Letters of Robert Bly and Tomas Transtromer (Graywolf Press, 2013). His prose work, Poetry on the Side of Nature: Writing the Nature Poem as an Act of Survival (2022) is published by Red Dragonfly Press. Smith currently teaches poetry at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis and posts poems and essays on his web site at www.thomasrsmithpoet.com. About his presentation, Thomas quotes Rumi, who said “Start a huge, foolish project, like Noah. It makes absolutely no difference what people think.” Smith explores a “huge, foolish project” of his own, a chronicle in prose and poetry of a year along his local river, the Kinnickinnic in western Wisconsin. What is it like to commit an entire year to writing a book? What “dangers” of failure haunt such an effort? What reserves of self-confidence and sheer blind faith does it take not to falter mid-course and fail? Smith has undertaken the year-long journey in writing more than once, and he encourages both poets and prose writers to test their mettle and inner resources against the challenge of the “long-distance run.” He will also discuss writers such as Aldo Leopold and Scott King, among others, who have undertaken their own long distance literary runs. “I write to learn,” Smith says. No matter your genre, there is something for you in this instructive session.</image:caption>

She began her career with a community newspaper in St. Paul and has written for publications including the Star Tribune, Minnesota Parent, Family Times, the Catholic Spirit and more. She spent several years in the magazine industry as a staff writer, editor and then managing editor for Tiger Oak Media, which was home to nine community lifestyle magazines, including Saint Paul Magazine, Edina Magazine and White Bear Lake Magazine. For the past six years, Julie has been with Next Avenue, a digital publication of PBS for readers 50 and older that is based at Twin Cities PBS in Lowertown in St. Paul. She is the Managing Editor and Senior Editor for the Living Channel. Pfitzinger is also the founder and CEO of Paris Morning Publications, a boutique publishing company with a focus on poetry and memoir. Launched in 2019, Paris Morning Publications has published books by Klecko and Thomas R. Smith, as well as an anthology of bird poetry featuring poets from across Minnesota and beyond. Regarding her presentation, Julie says “If you have a story to tell, it will be your job to bring your topic of choice into the light of day for others to see, read and understand. It is the editor’s job to occasionally prod, polish and help you reach that goal. Whether you are writing a nonfiction article or a memoir, the process really isn’t that different.” Julie will cover topics such as how to identify your audience, connecting with readers and working on drafts and revisions. “The most important part of this pursuit,” she said, “is finding your voice.” “How can your editor help and encourage you along the way? <image:caption>Presenter: “How to Find an Audience For Your Poems” JDanny Klecko was born in Los Angeles. During his youth, he moved to Minneapolis where he discovered at a young age that he was destined to be a baker. Eventually he went on to study bread courses at Dunwoody Technical College in Minneapolis and the American Institute of Baking in Manhattan, Kansas. Few people have baked as many loaves as Klecko. When President Gorbachev of Russia visited St. Paul in 1990, Klecko was commissioned to bake a loaf of bread that would be issued as a symbol of peace. From 2006 to 2009, he worked for American government agencies that placed him on loan to Russian industries where he worked his way from the Siberian Arctic down to the Black Sea. Klecko spent the first decade of his 45-year career running ovens on the night shift. Many times when he waited for the loaves to bake, he wrote poems. He expanded into books as well, having written close to a dozen at this time. His book Hitman—Baker--Casket Maker won the 2020 Midwest Book Award. Klecko recently launched the second book of his F. Scott Fitzgerald trilogy in Asheville, North Carolina where he was the keynote speaker at the Zelda Fitzgerald Festival. He has also partnered with St. Paul Public Libraries where he runs a Fitzgerald short stories quarterly meeting. His work has been featured in the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune and the New York Times. In spite of these accomplishments, Klecko is an ardent fan of “all things 651,” referring to the St. Paul zip code. He lives in a St. Paul mansion across the street from the home where F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote his first novel. He met his wife in 8th grade at Bible camp. They have two children and two grandchildren. About his presentation, Klecko will share proven strategies that have helped his poems gain audience and media attention. <image:title>Julie Schumacher - Julie Schumacher</image:title>
<image:caption>Keynote Speaker: “The Serious Side of Humor” Julie Schumacher is the author of eleven books, including the Dear Committee Members trilogy. The first novel in the trilogy was a national bestseller, receiving the Thurber Prize for American Humor. Schumacher is the first woman to be awarded the prestigious honor. The trilogy follows Jason Fitger, an English professor at an obscure Midwestern liberal arts college known as Payne University. Dear Committee Members, The Shakespeare Requirement and The English Experience all shine satirical light on academia and our cultural shift away from the humanities. The English Experience was named a People Magazine Book of the Week. The Washington Post called it “The perfect back-to-school novel for cynics.” Her other books include a collection of short stories, a satirical coloring book, and five novels for younger readers. Her first published story, “Reunion,” written to fulfill an undergraduate writing assignment (“tell a family tale”) was reprinted in The Best American Short Stories 1983. Subsequent stories and essays were published in The Atlantic, The New York Times, MS, The Chronicle for Higher Education, Prize Stories: The O. Henry Awards, and other venues. Her first novel, The Body Is Water, was published by Soho Press in 1995 and was an ALA Notable Book of the Year and a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award. She is a Regents Professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Minnesota, where she directed the MFA program for a dozen years. Originally from Wilmington, Delaware, Julie graduated from Oberlin College and Cornell University. About her keynote talk, The Serious Side of Humor, Julie said “Literature that makes us laugh can be a relief at a time when it’s hard to face the news. Comedy offers a reprieve and a welcome escape. We often think of it as entirely apart from ‘real life’ and its stresses. But humor is sneaky. Like a magician’s sleight of hand, it can distract with laughter while skewering a target or engaging in social critique.” Schumacher will talk about the seriousness of humor and her own experience as the writer of three comic satirical novels about higher education, a field in which she has worked for thirty-some years.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Ken Czech - Ken Czech</image:title>
<image:caption>Presenter: “When Historical Fact Collides With Historical Fiction” Ken Czech has planted his writing roots in both the non-fiction and fiction genres. An avid outdoorsman, Ken wrote the Outdoors Column for the St. Cloud Times (Minnesota) and has published a pair of annotated bibliographies focusing on the literature of hunting in Africa and Asia. Czech’s other non-fiction work includes serving as a contributing editor for America’s Civil War magazine and publishing over one hundred magazine articles and book reviews. Ken received an MA degree in history from St. Cloud State University (SCSU) and his doctorate in education from Saint Mary’s University. While teaching history at SCSU, he wrote books on women as big game hunters as well as anthologies on hunting in pre-World War II Russia and China. After retiring from teaching, Czech’s passion turned to writing historical fiction. His novels span historical events from 19th century Africa, 1842 Afghanistan, 16th century Siberia, and an attempt by Tsar Ivan the Terrible to wed into the family of Queen Elizabeth I in The Tsar’s Locket. Rabia Tanveer, in her review of his novel for Reader’s Favorite, said “This is an astonishing story that had me hooked from the beginning.” About his presentation, When Historical Fact Collides With Historical Fiction, Ken said, “I hope to have the participants identify the period or personality in history they are most drawn to and why. Once the real events are fleshed out, characters and conflict can be established. How do you picture your hero? How does your hero react to change or threat? It’s that reaction that launches your story and sets the hook for readers.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Diane Jarvi - Diane Jarvi</image:title>
<image:caption>Presenter: “I Sing Your Evening Into Stars” Diane Jarvi is a singer-songwriter and versatile performer of folk and world music. She has seven solo recordings and has been the recipient of a McKnight MacPhail Performing Fellowship and awarded a Minnesota Arts and Cultural Fund grant through the Minnesota State Arts Board. She has performed and taught workshops across the U.S. and in Europe. Under the name Diane Jarvenpa, she is the author of six books of poetry and has received The Midwest Independent Publishers Association Award. Her newest book, Shy Lands, from Blue Light Press, celebrates and grieves earth's wonders, those that are extinct and those that are still with us. She was awarded a grant to bring together her music and poetry to create the short video, The Way She Told Her Story. She intertwines her creative disciplines with teaching as a teaching artist with the Alzheimer’s Poetry Project MN. Diane Jarvi's recordings, Foreign Winds, Revontuli, Flying Into Blue, Paper Heart, Wild Gardens and Bittersweet are heard on radio throughout Europe, Australia, Canada as well as around the U.S. She is the subject of two film documentaries, Muistot and Kaipuu, by the award-winning filmmaker Erkki Määtänen. Her recent recording, This Ordinary Day, explores the relationship of melody, power and intricacy in poetry and songwriting. All of her recordings blend the artistry of her songwriting with her love of world music and poetry. Describing her songwriting presentation, I Sing Your Evening Into Stars, Diane said “For me as a poet there exists a relationship between poetry and song lyrics. Not always symbiotic, but they orbit each other. Lyrics can be created from our own stories and poetry, from ancestry, from borrowed texts, and using collaboration. This workshop will explore the variety of ways to approach creating song lyrics that are uniquely our own.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Michael Tisserand - Michael Tisserand</image:title>
<image:caption>Presenter: “Turning Facts Into Stories” Most of Michael Tisserand’s best-selling books and major projects have touched on Louisiana history and culture. He grew up near Alexandria, Minnesota and graduated from the University of Minnesota. Following a passion for New Orleans spawned from a teen-aged visit, he then moved to the Big Easy. He worked there as a writer for about 30 years before re-locating back to Minnesota two years ago. Tisserand's 2017 book, the Eisner Award-winning Krazy: George Herriman, A Life in Black and White, explored the art and life of the creator of the comic strip “Krazy Kat.” The New York Times included the book in its one hundred notable books for 2017. Tisserand explored Louisiana music in his first book, The Kingdom of Zydeco, which received the ASCAP-Deems Taylor award for music writing. “This is an important book for anyone with an interest in life, American music, southern culture, dancing, accordions, the recording industry, folklore, old dance clubs in the weeds, fortune tellers, hoodoos, or shotguns,” said Annie Proulx. In 2006, Tisserand told his own Hurricane Katrina story in his second book, Sugarcane Academy. Most recently, he launched his quarantine project, My Father When Young— a self-published collection of 1950s-era Kodachome slides he discovered while sifting through his late father’s things. Current book projects include a narrative nonfiction account of Charlie Chaplin and the making of The Great Dictator for Oxford University Press; books on the cartoonists Bunny Matthews and Jimmy Swinnerton; and a Louisiana music-themed children's book. Regarding his presentation, Turning Facts Into Stories, Michael said “If you wish to tell a true story about yourself or others, how do you create a narrative that is compelling to read yet is faithful to the facts? How do you make choices about storytelling versus simply relaying information? What is the role of research in your story and what is the role of story in your research? This presentation will look at how various nonfiction authors have tackled these questions as well as offer the chance to tackle them yourself.”</image:caption>
